Alexander Manufacturing Empowers Future Talent with London College of Fashion Sponsorship
PRESS RELEASE
Scotland – Aug 12th 2024 - Alexander Manufacturing, a leader of Scottish craftsmanship and heritage in the luxury fashion sector, proudly announces its sponsorship of Euan Mcdonach, a final year BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear student at the London College of Fashion (LCF).
This collaboration underscores Alexander Manufacturing's commitment to nurturing young talent and championing sustainable fashion practices. As one of the few students in the industry to secure such an opportunity, Euan designed "The Mackintosh Mac" – a coat inspired by the timeless design, innovation, and craftsmanship synonymous with Glasgow style and the Mackintosh jacket, a testament to almost 200 years of Scottish design tradition.
The coat was made using Lt Fawn Rubber Coated Cotton and black tape supplied by Fothergills in the UK. It features a unique construction method where the garment is glued together and sewn in places for reinforcement with rubberised cotton tape at the seams to ensure it is entirely waterproof. This tape is used on both sides of the jacket, creating a reversible outerwear piece emphasising the famous grid pattern in Charles Rennie Mackintosh's work and featuring the Glasgow rose motif on the back of the cape.
The creation of "The Mackintosh Mac" was a significant investment for Alexander Manufacturing. The patterns provided were meticulously sourced and adjusted, ensuring each panel was production friendly. Cut and assembled by hand, the coat required almost three days to complete, involving intricate gluing and sewing processes. This level of detail and craftsmanship highlights the company's dedication to high-quality, sustainable fashion.
Paula McIlwraith, Head of Production and Development at Alexander Manufacturing, said, "Supporting young talent is crucial for the future of our industry. This sponsorship has been a fantastic opportunity for a passionate student to engage with real-world applications of their skills and see their designs brought to life by industry professionals. It has also allowed us to showcase our skill and expertise, bringing Euan's creative vision to life. It was a labour-intensive project, but the result is a beautiful testament to Scottish craftsmanship."
Euan Mcdonach commented, "Scottish heritage and the quality and skill Scottish textiles are renowned for are central to my final collection. I've been fortunate to work with Alexander Manufacturing, a world-class manufacturer just 10 minutes from where I grew up. Their high-quality, sustainable approach aligns perfectly with all that I have been taught at LCF."
Nadia Alexander, founder of Alexander Manufacturing, emphasised, "Investing in young talent is essential for nurturing the pipeline of future makers. By supporting the training and upskilling of the younger generation, we ensure the continuation of our rich heritage and the evolution of our craft."
